WELCOME TO PORTAFERRY
|
CorrogWood OS Sheet 21 Grid reference J602531 Corrog Wood was acquired by the Woodland Trust in January 2000 and is one of 52 woods cared for by the Trust in Northern Ireland. The recently planted wood sits approximately one mile north of Portaferry, just off the A20 Deerpark Road on the Ards Peninsula in County Down. Travelling to Portaferry, the wood is located on the left hand side and a small car park is in place at the entrance. The land was formerly grazing fields set upon a drumlin in the rolling hills landscape typical of the Ards Peninsula. From the top of the wood you can see down to Strangford Lough, Ballyherly Lough and the Portaferry House lands. The excellent views reveal how little woodland there is on the Ards Peninsula, apart from the planted old estate lands. Visitors to Corrog Wood will be greeted by an intriguing wooden sculpture of a Dryad Lily the Dryad to be more precise. The sculpture has been affectionately and locally named the Frump in the Stump and, standing at the entrance, the Dryad keeps a watchful, protective eye on the new wood. And she certainly has the desired effect, attracting the interest of locals and tourists alike. Then pass on through the little kissing gate and a loop pathway will be waiting to lead you around the 14-acre wood, where a mix of approximately 12,000 native trees and 400 metres of hedging have been planted. The woods picturesque setting, with the distinct advantage of being situated within the Strangford Lough Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, makes it well worth a visit. So, next time youre travelling to or from Portaferry, make sure you take time for a quiet stroll and, of course, a quick word with Lily. to learn more about the Woodland Trust just click on the icon to visit their website. |
