is a small town situated  on the southern end of the Ards Peninsula, close to a spot known as the Narrows -this is the entrance to Strangford Lough. The town is well known for several long standing events, which include the Portaferry Triathlon  and The annual week long gala. Its population is in the vicinity of 2,500 people. Portaferry is also renowned for its very popular  aquarium  – the Exploris (or Northern Ireland Aquarium)  It also has its own little Marina, the Portaferry Marina.

There is a strong fishing tradition in the town and surrounding area. The commercial fishing of clams and prawns and in addition, the farming of Strangford lough oysters and mussels makes this a big local industry

A daily passenger/car ferry service is in operation from Portaferry to Strangford and carries a considerable 500,000 passengers each year.

Portaferry boasts a small Castle – well basically a 16th century little Tower house constructed by William Le Savage.  It’s  a 3  storey building high with an attic on top….well worth a visit if you are considering  pating a visit to the town itself.

The town is about 20 miles from Belfast, where you can experiencegreat shopping facilities, along with sightseeing and  also discover eating out in belfast.
